No bullshit! Either you pay attention and decide the kind of personality you must have in order to reach your goals and dreams, or your personal reality will be a function of your your current personality! If you don’t pay attention and decide what you want your life to be like, your old habits and traits will be running you on autopilot (old patterns and repetitive thoughts). Then you will get the result you have always gotten, nothing will change!
Well, it is up to you to decide. If you think about the last couple of weeks and what you have been doing, I would guess that many of the things are the same. They are running on autopilot giving you the same result over and over again, correct? What I am hoping is of course that you have chosen those actions to the greatest extent possible so that they are taking you in the direction you want your life to go (not there, yet, check out our post on on habits linked below).
What thoughts are you running again and again in your head? Research shows that the vast majority of our thoughts are old and repetitive and unfortunately most of those are negative… Spend a couple of minutes to write down the thoughts occurring most frequently in your head (guessing they are challenges, negatives or potential negatives as we tend to focus more on those).
So, now tell me this: The way you are thinking is very likely affecting how you act, right? And if you, like most of us, do the same thing over and over again, they have become habits that are done automatically (your conscious brain hardly being used as your body knows exactly what to do). What you always think, do and how you act equals your personality.
Is it then not true that your personality results in the current personal reality you are experiencing, your life?
I would say absolutely. Had you had different thoughts and acted differently, your current reality would most likely not have been what it is today…
What happens in your brain?
Emotional thoughts create new neurological pathways in our brain due to neuroplasticity. This literally means that ours brain literally changes in shape based on our thoughts. The more repetitive and the stronger the emotion linked to our thoughts, the deeper they get ingrained. You could compare it with a path in the forest. If no one walks on it, it disappears or it becomes hard to find. On the other hand, if loads of people use it, it becomes bigger and bigger and eventually there might be a highway taking you from one side to the other.
The same happens in our brains. The more repetitive our thoughts, the faster those thoughts will appear to us as they are going deeper for every day and will have a super fast connection (as we have trained our brain so extensively with this specific thought).
Our thoughts create these neural connections in our brain and they dictate who we are. One could say this network is our personality. So we are the sum total of our thoughts, just like Earl Nightingale once said.
Changing our personality
Since it is proven that our brains really can change (through neuroplasticity) based on our thoughts and we all know that we can change our thoughts by creating new experiences and habits, we can change our personalities in any way we want.
When we change our personalities, we will also change our personal realities. Since we are acting, reacting and behaving based on how we have shaped our brains, we create our own personal reality.
This means that you have the possibility to change your mind to become the person(ality) you really want to be. Where your focus goes energy flows. If you do like most people and mainly focus on negative things and repetitively do so (which is estimated to be 70-80% of our conscious and subconscious thoughts), guess what?! Your life (personal reality) will be just that, since your actions will be based on how you think and how you feel and most of those negative thoughts are now running you on autopilot as you have used them so frequently you don’t even think about it!
You have created a personal reality out of negativity BUT you can change that and there is proof that anyone can do it. It will take some time and effort but anyone who wants to live a life on their terms should for sure make sure they take control of their thoughts and thought patterns and I bet you are one of those!
Awareness is key
If you don’t know, you don’t know until you know and now you do! This is the time when you can actually start to take control over your life again. You don’t need to know all the fancy words of what is happening with your brain and its neurons and neurogenesis, new pathways in the Prefrontal Cortex etc.
The only thing you have to understand is that YOU create your life and it starts in your head because your thoughts will lead to actions and those actions will lead to your results. If you think you don’t get the result you want, you have to change! Your old patterns and habits are not working in your favor and as long as they are there, you will get what you have always gotten!
Change you thoughts, change your brain and you will change your life!
